Casual, star-gazing tone. Tanabata is whimsical and personal — sharing your own wish encourages reciprocal sharing. If at a festival, joining the tanzaku-writing tradition is a wonderful cultural participation moment for any foreigner.
Tanabata (July 7) celebrates the annual meeting of the star deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. People write wishes on colorful strips of paper (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches. Festivals with decorated shopping streets and fireworks take place across Japan, most famously in Sendai (August 6-8).
