Gesture & etiquette
An enthusiastic, celebratory tone suits this invitation; the soba can be homemade or from a restaurant — both are equally traditional; the key is eating before midnight.
Toshikoshi soba (年越しそば) is eaten on December 31st to symbolize cutting away the old year's hardships — the long noodles represent longevity. Do not break the noodles before eating (bad luck). Unlike most dishes, audible slurping is entirely acceptable and signals enjoyment. Eat before midnight for the symbolic full effect.
