Approach your superior's desk from the front and slightly to the side — never from directly behind. Stand at a respectful distance (about 1 meter). Bow slightly as you make the request. Hold any documents related to the consultation at your side or in front of you with both hands. Do not begin explaining the issue until they invite you to.
Always approach your superior with 'gosoudan ga aru no desu ga' (I have something to consult you about) rather than directly stating the problem. This indirect approach signals respect and gives your superior psychological preparation time. Never drop a problem on a superior without this preamble.
