ええ、家族で行きましたよ。去年は行けなかったから、今年はぜひと思って。
ええ、かぞくでいきましたよ。きょねんはいけなかったから、ことしはぜひとおもって。
Yes, we went as a family. We couldn't go last year, so we really wanted to go this year.
Gesture & etiquette
This is a warm, conversational question — ask it with a natural, relaxed tone. If they say they went, follow up with 'Doko desu ka? Goshusshin wa?' (Where is it? Where are you from?) — this naturally segues into a rich hometown conversation. If they lost someone recently, be sensitive to their emotional response.
Obon (mid-August) is Japan's most important ancestral remembrance period — families return to hometowns to clean graves, light lanterns, and welcome ancestral spirits. Asking about Obon plans is a completely natural summer conversation topic in Japan, similar to asking about holiday plans. It also opens warm conversation about family ties and hometown.
