Request a brief private meeting rather than asking in front of others; bring notes summarizing the problem; bow slightly as you open the conversation; come with your own initial ideas to show you've already thought it through.
Japanese superiors generally expect subordinates to attempt solutions before asking for help — framing your request as 'I've been struggling with...' signals you've tried; coming with preliminary solution ideas alongside the problem makes the consultation much more effective.
