Gesture & etiquette
Bow slightly when asking for help and listen attentively with small nods. Avoid looking around the bathing area out of curiosity — it is a shared, intimate space and direct staring makes others uncomfortable.
Key public bath rules for foreigners: wash thoroughly at the shower station BEFORE entering the communal tub; your towel must never touch the water; tattoos may be prohibited — check the sign at the entrance. Entering the communal bath without washing first is considered very disrespectful.
