How nostalgic! I properly displayed them as a little girl. I haven't put them out recently though.
Gesture & etiquette
A warm, nostalgic expression is appropriate. If visiting a family with a young daughter, admire their display: 「きれいなお雛様ですね！」(What beautiful hina dolls!) followed by genuine curiosity about the dolls' names or family history shows cultural appreciation.
ひな祭り (Hinamatsuri, March 3rd) celebrates girls' health and happiness. Families display elaborate tiered doll platforms (ひな壇) representing the imperial court. Traditional foods include 菱餅 (hishi mochi, diamond-shaped rice cake) and 白酒 (shirozake, sweet rice wine). Keeping dolls displayed too long after March 3 is traditionally believed to delay marriage.
