Moon-viewing (otsukimi) culture honors the autumn full moon, especially the September harvest moon (juugoya). The phrase 'tsuki ga kirei desu ne' carries a famous (apocryphal) literary association — Natsume Soseki is said to have proposed translating 'I love you' as 'the moon is beautiful' to capture indirect Japanese emotional expression.
