Gesture & etiquette
Stand at a respectful distance from the calligraphy work — do not touch or breathe directly on the paper (ink and paper are sensitive). Tilt head slightly while observing, indicating concentration. Soft, measured speech. A small bow (15 degrees) when complimenting the work.
Calligraphy (shodou) is a lifelong art in Japan, with masters often practicing for 40-60+ years. Complimenting the specific technique ('fudezukai' = brush handling) rather than just the result ('it's beautiful') shows knowledgeable appreciation. 'Tsuzukete irassharu' is the honorific continuous form. Calligraphers love sharing their journey, mentors, and the deep philosophical aspects of the practice.
