Gesture & etiquette
Stand at a respectful distance from the display — do not touch dolls or accessories. Comment on specific details (the empress's robes, the orchestra figures) for genuine engagement. A small head bow when complimenting the display. If invited to look closely, do so slowly with hands behind back.
Hinamatsuri (March 3rd, Girls' Day) features displays of ornate dolls representing the imperial court — emperor, empress, attendants, musicians, on tiered platforms. Family heirloom hinamatsuri sets are passed down. Tradition says the dolls must be put away promptly after March 3rd — leaving them out is said to delay the daughter's marriage prospects (a charming superstition). Hishimochi (diamond-shaped sweets) and hina-arare are seasonal treats.
