近くの神社でいいかな。明治神宮は人が多いから…
ちかくのじんじゃでいいかな。めいじじんぐうはひとがおおいから…
The local shrine should be fine. Meiji shrine gets too crowded…
Gesture & etiquette
Casual conversation, often over coffee in late December or early January. Pull out phone to look up shrine options or transit times. Light tone — this is shared planning, not a serious decision. Mention any food stall (yatai) favorites if visiting a popular shrine.
Hatsumoude (the first shrine/temple visit of the new year) is a near-universal Japanese New Year tradition. Going within the first three days (sanganichi) is traditional, but visits within the first week are equally accepted. Famous spots like Meiji-jinguu (Tokyo) and Fushimi-Inari (Kyoto) draw millions but with long waits; local neighborhood shrines offer the same spiritual benefit with no crowds. Often paired with omikuji (fortune slip) and protective omamori purchase.
