Gesture & etiquette
Casual but polite tone, often said while packing up at end of last work day before leave. Slight smile when wishing them well. If sharing omiyage plans, light tone ('chotto omiyage motte kimasu' = I'll bring back a little something).
Going home (jikka ni kisei) for Obon (mid-August) or year-end is a major Japanese family ritual. Telling colleagues briefly so they know your availability is courteous. Wishing them well in return ('yoi obon o') is reciprocal. If you live far from family and travel by shinkansen, mention any expected delays for honesty about your post-trip energy.
