Gesture & etiquette
Casual setting — light smile, can gesture toward the moon or the dango plate. If handing a dango stick, point the clean end toward the recipient. No formal bowing needed.
中秋の名月 (mid-autumn full moon, mid-September) is celebrated with stacked round dango (representing the moon) and pampas grass (susuki — wards off evil and resembles rice ears for harvest). Casual friend-to-friend exchange. At traditional households, wait until the host signals before eating — the offering is symbolically presented to the moon first.
