Gesture & etiquette
Face the colleague directly. Bring printed handover notes to the conversation. Measured tone. After verbal handover, send a confirmation email summarizing what was discussed — paper trail matters.
Handovers (引き継ぎ) before extended leave are essential in Japanese workplaces. Write a 引き継ぎ書 (handover document) covering current status, next steps, contact persons, deadlines, and where files live. Never disappear without explicit handover, even for short leave. The trailing 'のですが' invites the colleague's input rather than commanding.
