Gesture & etiquette
Speaking quietly to a companion before the act starts. During the performance: stay silent in quiet scenes, applaud at curtain (幕), yell only timed correctly to a 見得 if you know the house name confidently.
歌舞伎 (kabuki) audiences participate via 大向う (oomukou) — yelling actors' house names during dramatic pauses (見得 mie). 'Naritaya!' is Ichikawa Danjuro's house; 'Otowaya!' is Onoue Kikugoro's; 'Yamatoya!' for Bando Tamasaburo. Beginners should stay quiet rather than risk timing it wrong. Wear muted colors, never strong perfume. Phones must be off, not silent.
