Gesture & etiquette
Demonstrate by holding two fabric edges in front of you — bring right against body first, then left across on top (the only direction for living wearers). Tie obi at the back for women, at the front-side for men.
CRITICAL yukata/kimono rule: wrap the RIGHT side against your body first, with the LEFT side coming over on top (左衿が上 — left collar visible on top). The reverse (左前, left-first) is exclusively for dressing the deceased at funerals. Foreigners often reverse it by instinct — this single mistake is unmistakable in Japan. Tie obi at back for women, at front-side for men. Wear at 夏祭り (summer festivals) and ryokan stays.
