Casual home setting on New Year's Eve. Hand a bowl of hot soba with both hands. Sit together, light tone. Slurping is welcome with soba — shows enjoyment of the broth.
年越し蕎麦 (toshikoshi-soba, eaten on New Year's Eve 大晦日) — the long thin noodles symbolize a long life. Eat before midnight (some traditions say finish before the new year, some say cross over). Soba (buckwheat) also represents cutting away the past year's hardships (蕎麦切る = soba is cut easily). Common at home or at small soba restaurants on Dec 31.
