Gesture & etiquette
Casual home setting. If at the family home during Obon, watch silently while elders light the fire. Bow head briefly when family members pray. Help carry offerings to the family altar with both hands.
お盆 (Obon, around August 13-16) — Buddhist festival honoring ancestral spirits returning home. 迎え火 (mukaebi, welcoming fire) on the 13th at the front door or gate guides ancestors back. 送り火 (okuribi) on the 16th sends them off. Famous example: Kyoto's 五山の送り火 with massive mountainside fires (大文字焼). Households place 精霊馬 (cucumber horse to ride back, eggplant cow to leave slowly). Visit family graves during the period.
