They can also be used when New Year's cards are late, right?
Gesture & etiquette
Written correspondence — no gesture. If hand-delivering, place the card in both hands with a slight bow (15°). Use winter-themed designs (snowflakes, plum blossoms, tsubaki camellia).
寒中見舞い (kanchuu-mimai, mid-winter greeting cards) sent from January 8 (after 松の内, the New Year decoration period) until February 4 (立春). Three uses: (1) season's greetings during deep winter, (2) reply to a 年賀状 received late, (3) gentle send when your family is in mourning (喪中) and cannot send 年賀状. After risshuun the next card is 余寒見舞い (lingering-cold greeting).
