If attending: stand quietly at the bank, watch in silence. Photo-taking is generally fine but use silent shutter mode and no flash. Many participants are grieving family members — be respectful, not touristy.
灯篭流し (tourou-nagashi, floating-lantern ritual) is a regional Obon practice — paper lanterns on small wooden bases are released onto rivers, lakes, or the sea on August 16. Famous: Hiroshima Peace Memorial (post-WWII commemoration), Hawaiian Memorial Day adaptation. Many regions have switched to retrievable lanterns due to environmental concerns. The visual: dozens of glowing lanterns drifting toward dusk — unforgettable.
