Gesture & etiquette

If at a yose (rakugo theater), keep quiet during performance—reactions only at the punchlines. Applaud warmly at the end. If explaining elsewhere, mime the head-turn between two characters (left for one, right for the other) to demonstrate.

Rakugo is centuries-old solo comedic/dramatic storytelling. The performer (噺家, hanashika) sits on a cushion, uses only a folding fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props—they can become chopsticks, a letter, a sword, anything. Characters are switched by turning the head and changing voice. Stories often end in a 'punchline' (落ち, ochi).
