Gesture & etiquette
If demonstrating, mime supporting an imaginary puppet body with both hands at varying heights (head, mid, feet). Speak with measured awe. Recommend Osaka's National Bunraku Theatre for the most accessible introduction.
Bunraku (formally Ningyo Joruri) is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Three puppeteers handle each main puppet: 主遣い (head/right hand), 左遣い (left hand), 足遣い (feet). The narrator (太夫 tayu) voices all characters and narrates. Shamisen player provides musical heartbeat. Originated in Osaka 17th century. National Bunraku Theatre is in Osaka.
