If at a cemetery during higan, speak with quiet reverence. Mime placing flowers gently. If discussing food, mention botamochi/ohagi naming difference is fun trivia: 「春は牡丹（ぼたん）から牡丹餅、秋は萩（はぎ）からお萩、面白いでしょう？」.
お彼岸 (higan) spans 7 days around each equinox: 3 days before + the equinox + 3 days after. Ancestors are honored with grave visits, offerings of 牡丹餅 (botamochi, spring) or 御萩 (ohagi, autumn)—same food, different name by season. From Buddhist 「彼岸」 (the other shore = enlightenment); equinoxes have equal day/night, symbolizing balance between this world and the next.
