I have a small tattoo, can I bathe? Is it okay if I cover it with a sticker?
Romaji: Chiisana tatū ga aru no desu ga, nyūyoku dekimasu ka? Shīru de kakuseba daijōbu desu ka? / Reply Romaji: Mōshiwake gozaimasen ga, tatū no aru okyakusama no nyūyoku wa goenryo itadaite orimasu. Shisetsu ni yotte wa shīru de kakushite nyūyoku dekiru baai mo gozaimasu node, go kakunin kudasai.

We regret that we ask customers with tattoos to refrain from bathing. Please check, as some facilities may allow bathing if covered with a sticker.
Gesture & etiquette
Point vaguely to the arm or area where a tattoo might be, or show a tattoo cover-up sticker if one has it.
Tattoos are often associated with yakuza in Japan, so asking respectfully is key. Do not assume all onsens will allow it even with a sticker.
