Gesture & etiquette
Keep your gaze slightly downward during the pause, then make soft eye contact as you answer. Nod slowly (aizuchi) during the silence — not too fast — to signal active listening rather than confusion or disagreement.
The pause (ma — 間) is intentional, not hesitation. In Japanese communication, a considered silence before answering shows you are taking the question seriously. Never rush to fill the silence; in Japan, silence is respect — it signals thoughtfulness, not confusion.
