Speak clearly and at a measured pace. Before pressing hold, confirm the caller heard you. When returning, open with: 'お待たせいたしました' (Thank you for waiting).

This is the standard formal phrase for placing a client on hold. Never put someone on hold silently — always announce it clearly and politely. Aim to return within 30 seconds; if longer, check in and apologize for the wait.
