Gesture & etiquette
First purify hands at the temizuya (purification fountain): scoop water with right hand to wash left, then left to wash right, then rinse mouth without touching ladle to lips. Approach the main hall, toss a coin, bow deeply twice, clap twice with palms aligned, bow once more, then step back quietly.
This humble phrase uses the deferential form 'sasete itadaku' to show reverence for both the deity and the shrine's sacred space. After the bow-clap-bow ritual (二礼二拍手一礼), pray silently. Photography at the main hall (本殿) is often prohibited — always check signage first.
