Gesture & etiquette
Demonstrate the sequence by physically acting it out slowly: stand straight → deep bow (about 45°) × 2 → bring hands together at chest height and clap twice → bow once more. Smile encouragingly. If at a real shrine, do it together side by side so they can follow your lead.
The 'nirei-nihakushu-ichírei' (two bows, two claps, one bow) is the standard Shinto shrine etiquette. Note that Buddhist temples do not include the clapping — just two bows and a final bow. Knowing the difference shows cultural awareness that Japanese people deeply appreciate.
