Gesture & etiquette

Stand quietly beside the family; bring palms together at chest height and bow your head slightly for 10–15 seconds of silence; follow the family's lead for incense (お線香) — light a stick and plant it in the incense holder without blowing out the flame (use your hand to fan it instead).

Said when a foreign guest is included in a Japanese family's ancestral grave visit (お墓参り). '手を合わせる' (pressing palms together) is the respectful act of quiet prayer before a grave or altar. No specific words need to be spoken — sincere silence is perfect. Your request to join shows deep respect for their traditions and family bonds.
