Gesture & etiquette
A fist raised gently at chest height, or two thumbs up (universally understood now in Japan); from a distance, a big warm wave; if close and comfortable, a light supportive touch on the shoulder.
頑張る' (ganbaru — persisting with full effort) is one of Japan's core cultural values. '応援しています' (I'm supporting you) adds warmth beyond just urging effort. Important: for someone already exhausted or grieving, this phrase can feel pressuring. In those cases, 'そのままでいいですよ' (you're fine as you are) or 'そばにいますよ' (I'm here with you) is far more compassionate.
