Gesture & etiquette

Phone context — speak slowly and clearly when leaving a voicemail. State your phone number twice: once during the message and once at the end. Many Japanese people immediately return calls when they see a missed call, so a voicemail confirms the urgency level.

Japanese voicemails should be brief, clearly structured: 1) Company and name, 2) Callback number, 3) Reason for calling (brief), 4) Preferred callback time if any. 「折り返しご連絡いただければ幸いです」(I would be grateful for a return call) is more polite than 「電話してください」. Speak slowly and repeat your number.
