Approach calmly and make eye contact before asking. If they are seated, crouch or sit nearby so you are at their level. Smile warmly. When you bring the drink, present it with both hands and say 'douzo' (here you go) — presenting with both hands is a sign of care and respect in Japanese culture.
Regular drink check-ins are a key part of attentive caregiving. Framing it as an offer ('omochi shimashou ka' — shall I bring it?) preserves the resident's dignity by giving them choice. Offering two familiar options (water or tea) makes it easy to respond without feeling overwhelmed.
