Yes please. Can we go slowly?
Gesture & etiquette
Always position the wheelchair so the person can clearly see it before you help them. Make eye contact and smile before beginning the transfer process. Explain each step before doing it: 'Ashi wo koko ni okimasu' (I'll place your feet here). Maintain a steady, unhurried pace. Check in frequently: 'Daijoubu desu ka?' as you move.
Always offer wheelchair assistance as a question rather than an assumption — giving the person a choice preserves dignity. The reassurance 'yukkuri mairimasu node goanshin kudasai' (we'll go slowly so please feel at ease) directly addresses the most common anxiety about wheelchair transport. Always lock the brakes before helping someone in or out.
