Gesture & etiquette
Bow at approximately 20 degrees when introducing yourself to a colleague at the same level, and slightly deeper for senior colleagues. If you have your business card, offer it with both hands immediately after the introduction. At casual parties without business cards, maintain the same polite introduction formula — it signals professionalism even in informal settings.
At work social gatherings, introducing yourself with your department name before your personal name is standard in Japan — department identity is as important as individual identity in Japanese workplace culture. Adding 'itsumo osewa ni natte orimasu' even to someone you are meeting for the first time is the expected social formula, acknowledging the collective relationship between departments.
