Tilt your head slightly and look down for a moment with a brief pause before speaking. Avoid direct eye contact during the refusal — this softens the impact and signals discomfort rather than hostility. A gentle intake of breath before speaking (sucking air through teeth) also signals reluctance.
In Japan, a direct 'No' can feel rude and damage relationships. 「ちょっと難しいですね」is the standard way to decline — the listener understands it as a firm 'no.' Pressing further after hearing this phrase is considered poor social form and will cause discomfort.
