Gesture & etiquette
Sit beside, not across — facing them directly during meals can feel like supervision. Hands relaxed in lap, not hovering with utensils unless they request help. Smile softly. If they spill, do not react quickly or fuss — pause, then gently clean up while continuing conversation.
Mealtime can be stressful when help is involved — seniors may feel rushed or self-conscious. 'Yukkuri de daijoubu' (slowly is fine) explicitly grants permission to take time. 'Osuki na mono kara' (start with what you like) preserves agency — they choose, not you. 'Meshiagaru' is the honorific form of 'eat,' showing respect even in a casual care moment.
