Gesture & etiquette
Lock and unlock brakes audibly so the senior hears the safety check. Position yourself behind, hands on handles, calm posture. Walk at gentle pace, looking ahead for obstacles. Narrate transitions (doorways, slopes). Stop fully before any directional change.
Always announce wheelchair movement before starting — sudden motion is disorienting. 'Yukkuri' (slowly) and 'goanshin kudasai' (please be at ease) together reassure both about pace and about your reliability. When turning corners or going over thresholds, narrate ('chotto magarimasu ne' / I'll turn a little) so the senior anticipates the motion. Never push faster than walking pace.
