Gesture & etiquette
Approach quietly, soft and casual tone — never make it sound like a scheduled procedure. Offer arm support only if needed. At the door, ask 'naka ni iru hou ga ii desu ka? Soto de matte imasu ka?' (would you prefer I'm inside, or wait outside?). Respect their preference precisely.
Restroom care is the most dignity-sensitive area of eldercare. 'Otearai' (restroom, polite) is softer than 'toire.' 'Ikaga desu ka' (how about) is neutral — never use 'wasurete imasen ka' (haven't you forgotten) or implying schedule control over their body. 'Goissho sasete itadakimasu' (with your permission, I'll come with you) preserves their agency. Step out for privacy whenever safely possible.
