はい、これは学業成就、つまり勉強のお守りですよ。

はい、これはがくぎょうじょうじゅ、つまりべんきょうのおまもりですよ。

This is for academic success — in other words, a study charm.

Gesture & etiquette

Speak in a quiet, respectful voice — shrines and temples are sacred spaces. Receive the omamori with both hands. A small bow to the shrine attendant when paying. Place it gently in a bag or pocket; never crumple or stuff it carelessly.

Omamori (protective charms) at shrines and temples come in many varieties: gakugyou-jouju (academic success), kanai-anzen (family safety), kotsuu-anzen (traffic safety), enmusubi (love), shoubai-hanjou (business prosperity), and more. 'Goriyaku' (divine benefit) is the formal word for what the omamori promises. Never open the cloth pouch — the protective power is said to escape. Carry it for one year, then return to the shrine for proper disposal.
