Gesture & etiquette
If in person, slight bow (20 degrees) when extending the invitation. Calm, sincere tone. Have the date and venue details ready in writing to follow up. If they decline, accept gracefully without showing disappointment.
Inviting a superior to a workplace social event requires the same softening as declining their invitation. 'Moshi gotsugou ga yoroshikereba' (if your schedule permits) explicitly leaves room for refusal. 'Zehi' (definitely/by all means) shows genuine desire. 'Okoshi itadakenai deshou ka' is the most polite invitation form — 'okoshi' is the honorific 'come.' Send invitations 2-3 weeks in advance for senior schedules.
