Gesture & etiquette
Lock wheelchair brakes audibly. Position the wheelchair at a 30-degree angle to the bed for easier transfer. Stand close, knees slightly bent (protects your back). Place one hand on their back, the other supporting under the armpit. Count softly ('ichi, ni, no, san') so the motion is coordinated. Pause if they wince or hesitate.
Transfer (ijou) from bed to wheelchair is one of the highest-risk daily care moments — both for the senior (falls) and the caregiver (back injury). Always announce each phase, never lift in silence. 'Tsukamatte itadakemasu ka' (could you hold on?) invites them to participate in their own movement, which preserves muscle engagement and dignity. Lock wheelchair brakes audibly first; the senior hears the safety check.
