Gesture & etiquette
Stand one step below the senior when going up. Place one hand lightly on their lower back, the other ready to support their elbow. Move only after they begin each step. Never rush or push from behind.
The humble '参りましょう' is gentler than '行きましょう' and conveys walking together, not escorting. Always announce the action before doing it — never grab a senior suddenly. Position yourself one step below when ascending (one step above when descending) to catch a possible fall.
