Gesture & etiquette
Walk slightly behind and to the side they prefer (so you can catch falls). Point with whole open hand toward the destination, not with one finger. Match their pace exactly. Pause at curbs and call out ('段差がありますよ').
When guiding a senior on a walk, always offer the choice and explain the reason ('少し木陰がある' — a bit of shade). Never silently turn or pull them in a new direction. The humble 'まいりましょう' frames the walk as 'we go together' rather than 'I take you'. Watch for cars, uneven pavement, and fatigue signs.
