Wear formal black mourning attire. At reception: hold the fukusa-wrapped envelope in both hands at chest height, unwrap with quiet motions, place envelope name-facing-up on the table. Deep bow (45°) to bereaved family. Speak very quietly.
お通夜 (otsuya, wake) protocol: black mourning attire only (no shiny accessories, plain pearls acceptable). Carry 御香典 (condolence money) in a 袱紗 cloth — black, navy, or purple for funerals (red/pink are for celebrations only). At the reception, unwrap from fukusa with both hands, place envelope name-up on the desk. Bow deeply (45°) when receiving incense. Use older worn bills, not crisp new ones (new bills suggest you anticipated the death).
