Gesture & etiquette
Sit at the same eye level if possible (not standing over them). Soft smile, light tone. Listen attentively — if they hesitate, gently probe ('もし足りないところがあれば、教えてくださいね').
Daily meal-time taste check. 'お味' (oaji, honorific 'taste') sounds gentle and welcoming. Ask once after they've had a few bites — never before they've tasted. If they say 'too salty/bland', adjust on the next meal, don't dismiss. Seniors' taste perception changes; subtle complaints matter.
