Gesture & etiquette
If receiving koicha: take 3 sips, wipe rim with fukusa cloth (provided by host), pass to next guest with both hands, rotated so the front faces them. Quietly express appreciation to the host between sips.
薄茶 (usucha, thin tea, frothy) is served individually — most ceremonies use it. 濃茶 (koicha, thick tea, deep-bitter paste-like) is for formal ceremonies (正式) and shared via 回し飲み (rotating drink): the shoukyaku drinks 3 sips, wipes rim, passes to next guest. The shared bowl symbolizes unity. Always sip carefully — don't drain on your turn.
