Gesture & etiquette
Knock softly twice before entering, wait for response. Enter with a small dim light, never the full overhead light. Crouch beside the bed rather than standing tall over them. Speak in a quiet, warm voice. Bring water in both hands, lifted to their reachable height.
Night call response opens with concern, then offers a small concrete help (water) to make their request easy. 「どうされましたか」 is 「どうしましたか」 in respectful form—important in the middle of the night when they may feel embarrassed for calling. Speak softly to avoid waking neighbors. Bring water even if they only say 'nothing'—they may decline out of politeness.
