If demonstrating, pick up each vegetable gently with both hands as if showing a small treasure. Use your hand to mime fast galloping for the horse, slow plodding for the cow. Smile warmly—this is a gentle, loving tradition, not a solemn one.
「精霊馬」 (shouryouma) are small figures made from a cucumber (horse) and an eggplant (cow), pierced with chopsticks or matchsticks for legs. Set on the family altar during Obon. The horse is fast—so ancestors can return quickly from the other world. The cow is slow—so they can return leisurely, carrying offerings. A beautiful detail of Japanese ancestral reverence.
