Gesture & etiquette
Sit at their eye level, never standing over them. Approach spoon from below their line of sight (so they can see it coming). Small portions, half-teaspoon size. Wipe corners of mouth gently after every 2-3 bites with a clean cloth. Smile and say 「おいしいですか?」 between bites.
Feeding assistance. 「お口に運ぶ」 (carry to your mouth) is gentle phrasing. 「ゆっくり噛んでくださいね」 prevents choking—critical for seniors with swallowing difficulties. Hold spoon at the senior's chin level, not at their face. Wait for full swallow (visible throat movement) before next bite. Watch for coughing or watery eyes—signs of aspiration.
