Gesture & etiquette
If explaining at a temple, lower voice to a meditative tone. If demonstrating posture, sit in seiza (or cross-legged), hold imaginary brush vertically. Recommend Nara's Yakushiji or Kyoto's various temples for famous shakyo experiences.
「写経」 (shakyo) is the Buddhist practice of hand-copying sutras, most commonly the Heart Sutra (般若心経, 262 characters). Many temples offer experiences for visitors with brush, ink, and tracing paper. The slow, focused act is considered meditation in itself. Completed copies can be offered at the temple's main hall (honden).
